In the quest to create a healthy body that is fertility fit, eliminating and removing toxins is essential. On the plus side, detoxifying the body will also help to restore your health, improve brain function and help you to create the physical body you know you could have.
In a perfect world we would eat only pure, clean organic food, free of chemicals and toxins. However, life doesn’t always work like that. Whether you’re on holiday overseas, or at dinner with friends, there are times where it’s really difficult to eat clean.
In these circumstances, rather than create unnecessary stress trying to control the situation, you can use activated charcoal to soak up the toxins you’ve been exposed to. Activated charcoal has been used in Western Medicine, Chinese Medicine and Ayuredic Medicine for up to 10,000 years as a means to soak up poisons and improve intestinal health.
Activated charcoal aids the elimination of toxins through absorption which is a process that causes the charcoal to bind to the toxin, rather than allowing the body to absorb it.
Bulletproof Exec and world renowned biohacker Dave Asprey says that he and his family take activated charcoal whenever they eat out at restaurants, noting that “The difference is dramatic. It often prevents you from feeling bloated and tired after eating a big restaurant meal. When I feel unusually moody or suddenly tired, activated charcoal helps me get back in the game within minutes.”
5 Reasons to Use Activated Charcoal
- General detoxification
Regular use of activated charcoal can help to remove unwanted toxic build up in the body. Everyday we’re exposed to countless toxins from pollution, processed foods, non-organic food, personal care products (moisturiser, makeup, etc), cleaning products and more. Over time, these build in the body causing impaired fertility, allergic reactions and food sensitivity, cellular damage, premature aging, compromised immunity and brain fog.Taking activated charcoal helps to remove unwanted harmful chemicals and bacteria from the body reducing the time in which it has to cause damage/ proliferate. If you’re feeling unwell, or as though a bout of gastroenteritis is coming on, take activated charcoal and your symptoms should dramatically reduce, if not go away entirely.
- Poison and drug antidote
Activated charcoal has been used in hospitals and medical clinics for decades as an effective means of counteracting a poisonous load on the body. Studies have shown that taking a single large dose of activated charcoal can help the body to flush out unwanted poisons faster and reduce the risk of harm. Most organic and many inorganic chemicals such as pharmaceutical and recreational drugs, bleach, fertiliser, alcohol, pesticides, mercury and lead have been shown to be removed by activated charcoal.
- Eradicate body odour, skin problems and bad breath
Body odour and bad breath often results from toxins leaving the body, hence, taking activated charcoal can help to get rid the body of these ailments. Many body topical cleansing products also contain activated charcoal to help relieve bites, inflammation, insect stings and more.
- Relieve gas and bloating
Activated charcoal is contained in many products that relieve gas and bloating. It’s an age old remedy that helps by binding to byproducts that cause gas and bloating and in turn alleviates these issues.
As we age, our brain becomes increasingly sensitive to toxins and therefore causes greater cognitive impairment. Activated charcoal has been shown to reduce the rate at which the brain becomes sensitive to toxins. Studies have also shown that cellular changes associated with aging can be prevented through taking activated charcoal by helping to improve the adaptive function of organs such as the liver, kidneys and adrenal glands.
How to Use Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal can be used in the following circumstances:
- When you’re feeling queasy, or as though you may have gastroenteritis
- Take it when you’re going to eat out at a restaurant or when you’ve eaten processed food
- In a medical emergency when you’ve been exposed to a poison
- When drinking alcohol to help prevent the hangover
- If you suddenly feel moody or tired
- It can be helpful for relieving jetlag
- During pregnancy to bind toxins
- You can use it to whiten your teeth by applying some directly to your tooth brush
If you’re taking activated charcoal as a part of your daily health regime, it’s best taken at least a couple of hours after eating or taking vitamin or mineral supplements or prescription medication to prevent the activated charcoal interfering with the absorption of these.
We suggest using a high quality coconut activated charcoal, always read the label and avoid products that use magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide.
