Acid – Alkaline

It is important you maintain a healthy balance of acidity and alkalinity in your body so that you maintain good digestive health, keep candida at bay, keep cancer at bay and enhance your fertility when trying to conceive.

Having the right vaginal pH

Your vagina’s pH plays a very important role in your overall vaginal health. pH is the a measure of how acidic or alkaline something is. Remember in chemistry class?  pH is on a scale of 0 to 14, with the lower numbers representing higher acidity. A Healthy vagina ranges from  3.5pH – 4.5pH.

What effects your Vaginal pH?
  • Diet – namely from acidic processed foods and sugars as well as yeasts (read more below)
  • Exercise
  • Hormones
  • Menstruation products – Such as tampons, which are best avoided if trying to conceive. I recommend a Moon Cup or Rose Cup instead.
  • Personal hygiene products (so you are best to wash in luke-warm water)
  • Sexual intercourse (semen has a pH of between 7.1 – 8)

A healthy diet does best to include 60-80% alkaline foods and 20-40% acidic foods

A diet containing processed foods (anything from a factory) will be highly acidic. e.g. One primarily of cereal for breakfast, bread for lunch and pasta for dinner along with soft drinks, processed milk, etc. is highly acidic and will not be easily offset by the list of very low alkaline foods.

Acid – Alkaline Balance

The body functions on an intricate and inter-related system of chemicals that include amino acids, sugars, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. These substances break into two major groups; alkaline or acid substances.

In a healthy body alkaline and acid is balanced. If the body’s alkaline/acid relationship is unbalanced the body is unable tot assimilate nutrients and minerals as effectively therefore not preventing the best of health you could possibly be.

See the QiYoga website, via this link and use this as an easy Acid-Alkaline guide. I recommend printing it out and keeping it on your refrigerator door to help you remain mindful of your food choices.

A good place to start would be to cleanse first and then maintain a healthy, more fertile lifestyle by following an 80% alkaline diet if you want to improve your fertility.
