Why Can’t I Fall Pregnant – My Personal Experience

Why Can’t I Fall Pregnant? My Personal Experience

“Vividly I recall the deep longing to fall pregnant. No matter what we did I wasn’t falling pregnant. What had I done wrong? Why me?

 

Month following month failed, pregnancy test after pregnancy test came back negative. The heartbreak of hope and feeling so desperate was beginning to weigh me down.

 

I was feeling helpless, hopeless and at a deep level my maternal instincts weren’t being met as I continually failed to fall pregnant.

 

The doctors couldn’t even explain it.

 

They called it unexplained infertility

So, where to from here?

 

I looked at my lifestyle and wondered if my body was in optimum health for conception to take place. Maybe I was more stressed than I realised. I knew that the majority of women who are sub fertile (or given the diagnosis of ‘unexplained infertility) are that as a result of stress.

Was I eating nutritionally?

Was I getting sufficient rest and exercise?

 

As a society we concentrate more on ‘fixing’ health issues rather than looking at a root cause. We’ve been conditioned to believe that we have no option but to experience ‘disease’ in our lives. I’m a firm believer that our thoughts create our environment.

 

I’d read how stress has physiological effects that alter the balance of hormones in the body, especially relating to fertility. Strong emotions like fear and anger, another name for stress, can cause the body to produce more cortisol and fewer sex hormones. These changes are part of the fight/flight response that prepares the body for emergency action however this shuts down the abdominal area and increases the chances of infertility.

 

My quest to being a fertility success story

Step 1 – Meditate

My first decision was to meditate. If I calmed my body and slowed my thinking mind this would allow my body to enter a rest and relax state, rather than the fight/flight.

 

I practiced two types of meditation – one lying down, called Yoga Nidra and one sitting up.

 

For my Yoga Nidra guided meditation I chose the affirmation “my beautiful healthy baby” and I repeated this whilst visualising I was holding my healthy baby love in my arms. 7 Chakra System - Fertility Yoga Meditation

 

To meditate without being guided I sat on a cushion rather than lie down and after a couple of deep breaths to clear my mind began my mantra (words that you say over and over).

 

My mantra was “Quan Yin” because I was told she is the Goddess of Fertility and Abundance. (Read more here…)

 

 

Initially I meditated for a couple of minutes as I found it difficult sitting, however each day I increased my time and still kept my focus. Within a very short period I noticed my body becoming calmer and softer.  

I learned it’s not so much how long we meditate it’s the amount of awareness we give to your meditation.

 

I then focused on my breath as I’d heard how important oxygen is as a nutrient to sustain life. It appeared to be shallow breathing and for breath to be nourishing to the body long, slow and steady breaths in and out are required. I learnt more breathing techniques when at yoga, which you can learn via the QiYoga website, here

 

You could incorporate breath into your meditation as you visualise the oxygen going to your fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina as the oxygen sends enriched nutrients and revitalizes your reproductive organs. Imagine a soft belly infused with golden energy on your inhale; as you exhale imagine all obstructions to conception leaving with each breath.

Step 2 – Fertility Yoga

I was surprised to learn just how many poses assist with fertility. As I didn’t want to create stress I decided on a hatha class and then when I found out about Fertility Yoga I made the transition to that.

Initially I was apprehensive about the benefits of yoga but within a short time I became a firm advocate realizing the many benefits such as improving my chances of pregnancy with the many hip poses, as well as improving my flexibility, building strength in my bones and muscles and I left class with an overall feeling of calm and peace.

The Fertility Diet

Step 3 – Eating Fertility Foods

My diet changed as I became aware of several foods that could have been interfering with fertility. I cut out as many chemicals as I could and where possible bought organic to reduce ingestion of pesticides.

The ‘Dirty Dozen’ being foods to avoid.   I began eating more whole foods concentrating on beetroot (a cleanser), heaps of every kind of green vegetable as well as superfoods. I read labels to know exactly what was going into my mouth. I ditched the fizzy drinks, pre packaged and ready made meals. The Fertility Recipe Book 2nd Edition

 

I found the Fertility Recipe Book sooooooo helpful with over 100 quick and easy recipes covering breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts, smoothies and even cleanses!

 

Having read what goes into our water I began drinking only filtered water, and today I have pure Perth Hills Apostle Water delivered ($10 for 15 litres). I have absolutely no affiliation to Apostle except that I have it delivered to my front door!

 

As my general health improved with proper nutrition, sleeping more, meditation and yoga I found my relationship improved as I became mindful of what we were doing together as a couple.

 

I found I soon began to laugh a lot more and felt a true sense of joy and happiness.

I became a fertility success story and beat unexplained infertility

I did it! 18 months later I was holding my beautiful baby girl, we were very happy indeed.

 

My fertility tips for you

Wherever you are on your journey, know that your body is always changing. You influence your epigentetics when you live clean! This means think clean (positive thoughts) and eat/drink clean (avoid as many chemicals as possible). The former requires assistance so find yourself a fertility yoga class that teaches fertility meditations. I also combined Fertility Yoga Classes with Fiona’s Fertile Lifestyle Programme to give myself the best chance possible and recommend you consider this as a powerful support option too.

Is it safe to fly when TTC or pregnant?

Is it safe to fly when trying to conceive or pregnant?

Are you considering travelling abroad for your IVF procedures? Or travelling in your first trimester?

Lately I’ve heard too many stories of women who have travelled abroad for IVF procedures and are told that it is safe to fly home within 24 hours of the procedure… Only to find out several weeks later that their body could not hold the pregnancy.

I don’t want this to be you.

If you’re considering flying when you’re pregnant, immediately after an IVF procedure or while you’re trying to conceive here’s some factors to consider:

  1. The stressful impact of flying on your body;
    2. Staying healthy when you fly – bring your own food;
    3. Avoiding x-ray radiation;
    4. Avoid lifting heavy items; and
    5. Post procedure discomfort and risks.

Travelling after IVF or conception

Travelling is a highly stressful event for the body with exposure to increased amounts of radiation from airport scanners, radiation during the flight and also inflight recycled air that increases exposure pathogens (which is why so many people often fall ill after flying).

Radiation is energy transmitted in the form of rays, waves or particles, commonly produced by cosmic particles, the sun and man-made devices, such as X-ray machines and nuclear reactors.

Many doctors say that increased radiation exposure when flying is negligible, however, the overall impact depends on the total amount of radiation a person has been subjected to, as its effects are cumulative.

According to Dr Edward Dauer, director of radiology at Florida Medical Centre in Fort Lauderdale, “even one X-ray, by itself, has the potential to cause cancer,” he said. “The more exposures you have, the more chance you have of developing a problem.”

The main risks of too much radiation are cancer, passing on genetic defects to future generations and damage to the foetuses of pregnant women.

In addition to the increased levels of radiation that you’re exposed to when flying, your body must fight off the barrage of pathogens from the recycled aeroplane air. If you’ve recently undergone an IVF procedure it’s imperative that you keep stress to a minimum and maintain a healthy immune system to maximise the likelihood of success. Flying, unfortunately, causes both stress to the body and has potential to compromise the immune system.

How to stay healthy when flying

Everything that we put into our body either heals us or harms us. Just because you’re jetting off for a holiday doesn’t mean you can ignore your health!

Whenever I fly I pack my own nutritious, organic food and take it with me. It’s super easy to do, tastes way better than plane food and means you can maintain eating the best for your body while en route. The main factor to consider is that you’re not allowed to bring more than 100ml of liquid on board an international flight (check the specifications of the country you’re leaving from just to be sure). I often take dips such as homemade organic hummus and avocado dip and have never had these confiscated. I have once had a tub of dairy free coconut yoghurt taken from me – however was able to scoop out the amount I needed for my gluten free bircher muesli first!

Please note – if you have recently undergone an IVF procedure or are pregnant, aeroplane food may pose a potential health risk and should be avoided for risk of food poisoning.

Avoiding radiation – Miron Glass containers

Airport x-ray machines for the most part are unavoidable. It is possible to request that you not be x-rayed and instead opt for a pat down however this is not permissible in some jurisdictions such as when leaving Australia. Throughout the USA they do offer a pat down alternative.

One thing you can do is to store your food in miron glass containers to help to protect your food from these harmful rays.

Flying when trying to conceive or after IVF

Miron glass was first developed as containers for a line of energetic medicines in Cypress. The glass was chosen because violet light shows the highest vibration frequency (720 – 770 billion Hertz) of all colours, corresponding exactly to the vibration frequency of our central nervous system.

Miron glass has outstanding proof of being able to preserve substances contained within for long periods of time. Normal tap water, for instance, has been kept fresh in dark violet glasses for over 3 years without any problems and without any preservation or other techniques being used.

Miron glass blocks the complete spectrum of visible light with the exception of the violet part. Simultaneously, it allows a certain part to be permeable for radiation in the spectral range of UV-A, and infra red light. This unique combination offers optimal protection against the ageing processes that are released by visible light, thus lengthening durability and potency of foods stored in the containers.

Miron glass has also been shown to block radiation from x-ray machines in airports and other sources of radiation, thereby protecting natural products packaged in miron glass.

Don’t lift heavy items

Regularly lifting heavy objects in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy may increase your risk of miscarriage. An object is considered heavy if it’s 11kg or more.

The current recommendation is that the maximum load a pregnant woman should lift in late pregnancy should be reduced by 20 to 25 percent from that which she was able to lift in her pre-pregnancy state.

Even though miscarriage from heavy lifting is considered a low risk, it’s still a risk that can be avoided. If you do fly early in your pregnancy or post IVF, fly with someone and have them lift your luggage. Alternatively, seek assistance from the airline staff – you can prearrange special assistance before you fly. Most of us struggle to allow others to help us, but wouldn’t it be better they help you rather than possibly miscarrying?

Discomfort post IVF procedure

Another factor to consider if you choose to fly soon after IVF is the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) which happens when your ovaries overreact to the fertility drugs you’re taking. Your ovaries may quickly swell to several times their normal size. They may also leak fluid into your abdomen.

If it is severe, you can end up in the hospital, though not many people get it severely. While OHSS is not terribly dangerous, it involves some discomfort, swelling, bloating, etc. that can take a few weeks to dissipate and may not be something you’d want to deal with on vacation.

What you eat, how much you exercise, and whether you smoke or drink alcohol are all important factors to look at once you have decided to try for a baby.

Remember it takes three months to produce and then release an egg at ovulation. If you incorporate all of the tips below into your pre-conception care period it can vitally improve egg quality in women as well as sperm quantity and viability in men.

You can feel wonderful during your pregnancy if you take good care of yourself. Increase your odds of a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby, by following these sensible steps to keep yourself in top condition:

Nutrition

What you eat during pregnancy will give your developing baby the healthiest possible start in life. A nutritious diet is directly linked to a higher chance of a normal birth-weight, improving fetal brain development and reducing the risk of many birth defects.

A healthy, whole food, nutritious diet will also reduce the risks of pregnancy complications like anemia, and may also minimise morning sickness, fatigue, and other unpleasant pregnancy symptoms. Good nutrition is also thought to help balance mood swings and may improve labour and delivery.

A well-balanced diet to help ensure the health of both mum and baby from pre-conception and throughout the nine months of pregnancy includes:

    • Protein (an easy option is via our medicinal mushrooms in Shield)

  • Calcium – look for whole foods that contain calcium and magnesium (that helps your body absorb calcium) e.g. sesame seeds, spinach, chard, etc.
  • Fruits and vegetables (whole and organic)
  • Whole grains (but not too many)

A simple way to satisfy your nutritional needs during pregnancy is to eat a variety of foods from each of the food groups every day.

Sometimes during pregnancy it is going to be hard to keep food down, or certain foods are going to be unappealing. Pregnancy smoothies are an easy way to get nutrients into your diet. You can add greens, protein, fiber from fruit and vegetables etc. to your smoothies, which will help you to meet your daily nutritional quota.

While most nutrients needed during pregnancy should come from food, prenatal vitamin supplements do play an important role. Folic acid (or betterstill, folate) is a B vitamin that has been found to be a very important supplement for pregnant women.

Folate taken several weeks prior to pregnancy and for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy have been found to lower the risk of having a child with a neural tube defect by approximately 75 percent.

Are you worried about pregnancy weight gain?

This is natural, many women are concerned about how much weight they will gain during pregnancy. It’s important to maintain a healthy weight gain. It’s important for you to monitor your weight and nutritional needs throughout the pregnancy. Weight gain recommendations will vary for women who are underweight before conceiving, for those who are obese, and for those with a multiple pregnancy (twins etc.)

What Not to Eat

It is essential to be aware that there are certain foods you should absolutely avoid so as to protect your baby’s health.

  • To protect mum and baby from bacteria or parasitic infection (e.g. Listeriosis), make sure that all milk, cheese, and dairy products are pasteurised. Pasteurised products are very difficult for the liver to break down so do be mindful not to consume too much pasteurised dairy. You don’t “need it” so classify it as a treat.
  • No soft cheeses with a white-mould rind (such as Camembert, Brie etc.) or blue mould veins (such as Gorgonzola, Danish Blue etc.).
  • No raw or undercooked eggs or foods containing raw egg, e.g. mayonnaise.
  • No cured meats, liver or liver products and pates.
  • Fish – no marlin, shark and swordfish, tuna or any canned fish as they contain high levels of mercury, which is harmful to your developing baby’s nervous system.
  • Limit consumption of oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines to a maximum of 2 -3 times a week
  • If you love your sushi, stick to only the vegetable and not fish based sushi.

Also avoid refrigerated, smoked seafood and undercooked meat, poultry, and raw seafood such as oysters.

Fluids

Drink organic fresh pressed juices and pregnancy smoothies in addition to water.

Drink plenty of fluids — at least eight to 10 glasses of clean spring water a day (not from plastic bottles) — avoiding caffeine, sugary and fizzy drinks and any drink with artificial colouring and flavourings.

As well as tea and coffee, caffeine is also present in cola based fizzy drinks, chocolate, energy drinks and some cough and cold remedies, so read the label.

Exercise

Moderate exercise is not only considered safe for pregnant women, it’s encouraged and thought to benefit both mum and growing baby. Exercising 30 minutes a day is proven to help circulation, strengthen muscles, strengthen bones (if you do our Pregnancy Yoga DVD) and decrease stress.

For the majority of normal pregnancies, exercise can:

  • increase energy levels
  • strengthen muscles and endurance
  • reduce backaches
  • relieve constipation

Aerobic exercises, such as walking, jogging, swimming and QiYoga’s® Pregnancy Yoga DVD can stimulate the heart and lungs and improve circulation, as well as muscle and joint activity, which help to process and utilize oxygen. Walk or jog in cool, shaded areas or indoors in order to prevent overheating.

Hatha Yoga (QiYoga®)

Pelvic Floor Exercises

The extra weight you carry during pregnancy can see the muscles, ligaments and tissues of your pelvic floor overstretched and weakened. Pelvic floor exercises are simple to do, wherever you are.

It is important that you exercise your pelvic floor during and after pregnancy because they:

  • Strengthen the muscles of your vaginal walls to enable you to push your baby out more effectively.
  • Help prevent the embarrassment of leaking pee.
  • Help give you back a great sex life (eventually!) after childbirth
  • Protect you from incontinence in the longer term.

    • Tighten the muscles around your back passage and draw them up, as if trying to stop yourself from passing wind. At the same time, tighten the muscles around your front passage and draw them up as if trying to stop passing water.
    • Once you’ve worked out what you’re doing, aim to hold the squeeze for a few seconds, and then relax for a few seconds. Gradually increase these times until you can hold the squeeze for up to ten seconds and repeat ten times.
    • Then try another variation by tightening the pelvic floor muscles quickly and strongly, then relaxing quickly, up to five times.

Get adequate sleep

You need to be getting at least eight hours a night. If you’re suffering from sleep disturbances, take naps during the day and see your doctor for advice, if it persists. You can also see our article on how to improve sleep, here.

Cut out the bad habits

Healthy lifestyle choices will directly impact the health of a growing fetus. It’s important to cut out bad habits like smoking and alcohol consumption. These have been linked to serious complications and risks for both mother and baby.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is associated with a wide range of problems in the developing baby. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can also lead to complications including:

  • miscarriage
  • premature labour and delivery
  • low birth weight
  • stillbirth
  • abnormal growth
  • developmental problems in childhood

Smoking

There is plenty of proof that smoking during pregnancy is hazardous. Smoking affects blood flow and oxygen delivery to a baby, thus affecting growth.

Cigarette smoking is the single most common cause of low birth-weight babies, which in turn is the most common cause of death and illness in the first few weeks of life. Smoking is also linked to a wide variety of pregnancy complications, including:

  • vaginal bleeding
  • ectopic pregnancy
  • premature placental detachment
  • premature labour and delivery

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful. Living a healthy lifestyle, through maintaining a healthy, balanced diet and keeping yourself mentally and physically fit and active, will make your pregnancy as enjoyable as possible for both you and baby. A balanced and healthy routine will ensure you are at your fittest for the stamina required for child birth!

3 steps to stay empowered when trying to conceive

Step 1:

Re-awaken to the possibility that you can and will be a parent to a happy, healthy baby within 12 months

Sometimes what you perceive is not the case at all.
